Chapter 23- Opening of the second floor

Remember that this was done by machine translation so when you see * beside the Japanese it means am not sure if its translated correctly. When you see DNT it means I didn`t understand what is been said or am not sure how to phrase it english, normally with time i usual make an readable guess on what is been said so hopefully later i will put something there. Also to me this chapter feels like my worst attempt at translating so am going to try harder(spent more time) for the next chapter.

Arashichan12 is response for making a lot of corrections for my mistakes.

“Hacchyuuu!

With an sneeze Yuusuke woke up. While pulling the blanket wrapped around him closer, he then absentmindedly looking around the area. The room was complete dark making it impossible to see anything.

(…….Oh, well guess I went to bed like this.)

Mizuki left after last nights event. Yuusuke thought returning now would be annoying, so he locked the door to the locker room and just slept like that.

He groped around, searching for the flashlight and switched it on. With a knock on the door he quickly got himself dressed.

“Are you awake?”

“Yes”

“If you’d like breakfast, I can prepare some for you.”

“Eat”

“In about 10 minutes it would be ready.”

“Got it.”

When leaving the hallway besides the fluorescent ceiling lamp the morning sunlight was hitting his face.

The ends of the corridor that extended from the left and right of the elevator were made of glass that let the sunlight stream in, and plants that were as tall as his height were placed there. The plants were being used in place of a drying rack and there were many towels were hanging on the leaves.

While yawning and taking up one of the towels I look at the state of outside. Several zombies were in the parking lot. Which was an usual scene.

“It ‘s a good weather.”

While Yuusuke was humming  he went towards the boys restroom to wash his face.

Breakfast was the same as always, with preserved food as the main dish. On the dining table, there was a countless amount of containers and canned food lined up, making a sad, pitiful meal. They were also in a situation where they had to reuse disposable wooden chopsticks by rewashing them. The hot water in the tea cups was the only thing on the table that offered warmth.

When meeting Mizuki, she display small signs of awkwardness but Yuusuke simple ignored it.

The four people were at the table eating silently.

(To eat rice. I need to bring a small rice cooker)

Yuusuke though about such things till Mizuki made a small coughs. Holding her mouth she turned away only to start coughing a lot.

“Is it the cold? Don’t spread it.”

Those words caused Mizuki to make a small frown.

Her facial expression was saying who`s fault is it.

“Its because i was forced to do somethings yesterday…..”

“Is that so? Don’t spread it.”

Mizuki has a sour look.

Ignoring the tree people Yuusuke opens his mouth to almost finish eating.

“Well…then. All of you”

Those words made Mizuki and her two younger brothers stop their movement. As they were they were patiently waiting for Yuusuke words.

“I would say to omit(forget) such bothersome thing. Since I saved all of your lives. Therefore in a short while you will all follow me. Is such an arrangement good?

「面倒くさいことは省いて言うぞ。お前らの命は俺が助けた。だからしばらくは、俺に従ってもらう。そんな認識でいいな?」*

“Yes.”

Mizuki gives a small reply.

The two younger brothers look at each other and then nodded in agreement.

Yuusuke continues his words.

“What do you all do everyday?”

“Our habits…..?”

Mizuki is puzzled

“While I went in search of food, what did you do here?”

“Nothing…in particular.”

Yuusuke became silent due to those words.

It seemly this atmosphere was also shocking for Mizuki because she looked uncomfortable.

その呆れたような雰囲気を察したのか、深月も気まずそうな表情を浮かべた。

After a while Yuusuke opens his mouth.

“I see… Well, that’s fine. First off, let’s explore this entire floor today. I want to close the shutters to the service entrance in the basement, but I haven’t found the keys yet. Go look for them. Also any documents pertaining to devices or facilities and such. Memos, drafts, instructions, anything is fine, just bring it back.”

“Ha….let me see, so we are to look for a key and some documents?

“Yeah. The three of you.”

“I understand.”

They have no choice but to hope that none of employees of the supermarket who were turned into a zombie has the key.

Even if they didn’t find anything, so that the three wouldn’t overly think about meaningless things, there was a significance in dividing the work.

The two brothers nodded faithful to the important duty they were entrusted with.

“I will do some errands. Maybe….I will return in the evening.”

“Okay. Please be careful.”

Mizuki said it in as if tone that it would be troublesome if the rice ran out.

arashichan12-(Basically he’s saying Mizuki is seeing him as an important resource for food.)

While descending to the second floor of the supermarket Yuusuke folded his arm plunging himself into his thoughts.

“Well then… The problem is how foolish those are going guys be.”

arashichan12-(I think here Yuusuke is commenting on the jobs he assigned them and their rate of survival because they have been foolish and naive in the past.)

The monitors supervising the supermarket in the security office were blacked out. Since operating it was difficult, Mizuki probably couldn’t figure out how to use it. In the meantime, Yuusuke decided to clean out the second floor zombies.

On the second floor, in addition to the daily necessities, there was the drug store, the women’s apparel store, the dollar store, and many other tenants. If he could liberate the area, then Yuusuke could relax a little from bringing Mizuki and her brothers goods for every little thing. Afterwards, it was fine for them to take care of this place by themselves.

But what Mizuki would think of forcefully removing the second floor zombies was the problem.

Since you could remove the three zombies on the second floor and survive, then surely it’s not impossible, she’d think. Why won’t he expel the first floor of zombies too?

Yuusuke did not intend to open the first floor as yet.

If Mizuki could obtain food freely, then she would lose all reason to obey Yuusuke. Even though it may not be long term, there was still the possibility of Mizuki acting recklessly again.

Even if he did clear it, with the exception of food, Yuusuke made it so that those who followed him would be in a more profitable situation.

“……Unexpectedly I noticed that on the second floor there were a few amount of zombies that had to be eliminate. The first floor would have way too many. Will I go there? ”

If an ordinary human used a pistol to eliminate a zombie the gunshot would be heard by the zombie`s and in a blink of an eye…..

To take advantage of the innocent Mizuki i need to talk her into suitable con.

Yuusuke immediate started arranging a plan.

On the second floor there are 6 zombies, I need to confirm every corner, the girls restroom and lounge in the backyard etc.

An old grandfather, 40 years old lady(aunt), 20 something young man, etc. There was also an young woman who from my view looked like she used to be popular with her face but because her stomach was teared from being bitten and her index finger could not move.

“Okay that way, that way. Go goo.”(Go, go or press forward)

With much pulling and pushing, he guided them to the first floor. When he pushed them on their back, they staggered and walked away. Rather than having to smash in their head and carry them off, it was much easier to have them walk away by themselves.

When everybody reached the first floor the fire door to the stairs were closed.

Since the side door was constructed so it could be opened from both the stairs and the floor, he took the cart near the entrance, moved it next to the door and secured it in place. This was, the stairs could be sealed.

“All that’s left is the escalator then?”

Returning to the second floor they went towards the center of the floor.  The escalator on the first floor that connects upstairs and downstairs is suspended.

First of all while we descend to the first floor we looked around the area.

The switch bow was buried in a nearby pillars.

When it is opened from the key taken from the security guard we saw the switches were lined up vertical 『▲』『■』『▼』. The button 『▼』 was pressed but the electric window fails to start.

“All right”

After closing the switch box, I returned to the second floor. Once I closed the shutters from the second floor side, the two way blockade was finished.

The only entrance to the third and second floor was now the elevator.

The possibility that the first floor zombies calling the elevator and pressing either the 2F or 3F button would probably never happen.

Among the zombies they had traces of their behaviors they did during their lifetime though they don’t do complex actions. Even at the station the zombie`s forceful pass through the ticket gate and the the flap door for deterrence was broken.

“I guess this is good enough… There’s still time left.”

The wristwatch confirms that it still before noon.

Coming down to the first floor he went and straddle the motorcycle at the rear entrance. Yuusuke went to gather other goods.

Around 7 o’clock in the evening the sky was complete dark.

Yuusuke from a minivan stopped at the rear entrance of the supermarket to unload his goods. He went to look for goods from the electric store and the hardware store. He also brought documents from a library. An push cart was used to carry the goods to the elevator.

The luggage was carried to the third floor, incidentally Mizuki appeared to be installing the rice cooker and office kitchenette(kettle). Still coughing lightly. (T/N not sure)

“Takemura-san, whats that?”

“The rice cooker. I want to eat rice.”

“Rice….”

Mizuki face shined with expectation.

“Thanks for bringing us food, even if it’s just canned food. There’s a rice sack in the hallway, so please use that.”

“…..Ah but you don’t have to worry about the tableware. Would you like rice ball(onigiri)? Although it would be good if you had salt and seaweed(laver).”

“Oh, that’s right. Wait a bit. I opened up the second floor, so we can get tableware from over there.”

“?”

Yuusuke strange words caused Mizuki to be puzzled.

When he opened the fire door’s side door, Mizuki made a fearful expression. When they went around the second floor, she shrunk behind Yuusuke’s back and watched her surroundings nervously.

Eventually Mizuki express became bright because it was understood that it was safety since there was no zombies anywhere.

Although walking stiff holding the shopping cart she looked happily at the shelves(display case).

That sight made Yuusuke quite disappointed.

He thought he would be asked all sorts of questions like, how did he remove the zombies, or why he hadn’t done it until now, but it hadn’t developed into that situation at all.

Mizuki was fascinated with goods spread out before her and she finished by saying ‘amazing’.

There was no need to be suspicious or doubtful of something that was advantageous to you, I guess.

Or maybe, it was hard to voice her suspicions about after she had been paranoid made the mistake of doubting Yuusuke.

(Although it may simply acting without thinking)

In Mizuki’s sights was a full and straining basket. On this floor, they could get clothes, or daily necessities, or medicine, or cosmetic products.

Menstruation products would also be a matter of life and death is for Mizuki. That was one of the reasons why Yuusuke decided to clean the second floor. Having a high school girl ask him to supply those kinds of things would be awkward.

While throwing a glance to the struggling Mizuki, he headed towards the elevator.

“Since you’re operating upstairs, just get whatever you think is necessary whenever you need to.”

“Yes! Ah, is that so. I found Takemura-san key.”

Oh are you serious?

“It was there in the office’s desk mixed with some other ones. There’s a tag on it, so it should be easy to recognize. We also found a lot of documents there.”

“Wow. To be honestly I didn’t expect anything. You did well.”

Mizuki blushed a little to those words.

  1. find some DNT in the word I don’t know section, I commented something earlier.

it’s possible that once you suspect something and make a mistake, the suspicious expression of their husband/man is probably hard to say.

  2. Well this is going to be a long comment. I had some spare time so I went around translating all the left over Japanese in this post and interpreting it to what I thought it meant. I just got into this novel, and I like it so far. But this chapter was kinda hard to understand, so I took it upon myself to clarify the lines you weren’t clear about. Can’t say it’s 100% since I’m not a qualified translator, but it shouldn’t be too bad. Also, the 1st person 3rd person views confused me, so feel free to edit my translations if you use them.

Thanks for the hard work~ 🙂

There was no need to be suspicious or doubtful of something that was advantageous to you, I guess.

In Mizuki’s sights was a full and straining basket. On this floor, they could get clothes, or daily necessities, or medicine, or cosmetic products.

While throwing a glance to the struggling Mizuki, he headed towards the elevator.

    「上で作業してるから、必要そうなものは適当に運びこんどけよ」
“Since you’re operating upstairs, just get whatever you think is necessary whenever you need to.”

    「お、マジか」
    “Oh, seriously?”

    「事務所のデスクに、他のと一緒にまとめてあります。タグ付きですから、すぐわかると思います。書類もいろいろ見つかりました」*
